Spam :(

Just a quick comment to say that I've had to change some of the settings on my blog beause I've been getting a bunch of spam comments recently. :( I've put word verification on, and I changed the people allowed to comment to "registered users (includes OpenID)". So what I assume that means is that people won't be allowed to post under "anonymous" any more. But I'm not entirely sure, so if anyone commenting has any problems, please email me at the address in the top of the right sidebar, and I'll try to sort it out.

Seriously, I don't get the point of spam. I mean, does anyone reading a blog post about knitting or dancing seriously read the other comments, and think "Wow, top meds???? I need me some of those!!!" and proceed to click the highly suspicious link? No, I don't think so. So what's the point? Sigh. The internets can be strange...

I think Blogger is fortunately relatively spam-free thanks to word verification. I know I had a huge shock when I moved to Wordpress and even though I have spanguard stuff and filters for comments some still get through.

Now I must go and buy some cheap Viagra... :-P

I know what you mean about spam. The amount I get in via e-mail about things that certainly don't interest me annoys me. I know however there are people who employ people to sit in front of a screen all day doing "captcha". This means that you get the word verification images and you type out what you see so they are working on ways getting round this as well although I have enough problems at times doing the word verifications on things I need to lol

Spam comments do suck! I don't understand the ones that are written in Russian or some other such language that has nothing at all to do with what I'm writing... what is the point?

I will add that instead of turning off email only comments altogether you might try to do word verification and comment approval, this way you can catch the comments before they are published. I only say this because I've gotten quite a few legitimate comments from people who only have email addresses.

In either case, yay for less spam! :)

Yeah, it's a good idea! I have verification on my blog comments too. And besides then you know when someone has made a comment!
